Drug-Resistant Strain of Syphilis Emerging Globally

It’s more important this day and age to practice safe sex as incurable STDs become more prevalent. Syphilis is one of the most devastating sexually transmitted infections and until now has been completely curable.  However, doctors around the globe have begun to notice a new antibiotic-resistant strain of the bacteria is emerging and the problem could have serious consequences for many.

Current Treatments For Syphilis

Penicillin is the first choice to treat syphilis to date, but sometimes macrolides will be prescribed.  Macrolides can be taken orally, making them much more convenient and for those with penicillin allergies, the use of macrolides has increased.  Azithromycin is also used for a range of other STDs. When someone infected with syphilis without knowing it is given a prescription of azithromycin, it can be contributing to the development of resistance. Researchers studying syphilis have been aware of a growing problem with the macrolide resistance first in the U.S. and now on a global scale.  It is important to know that syphilis isn’t resistant to multiple kinds of antibiotics yet, but that could be something that evolves in the future.  Continued research of syphilis genome is ongoing in an effort to spot early signs of this.

Keeping You and Your Partner Safe from STDs

STDs are completely preventable and you can take steps to keep yourself and your partner healthy:

  • Make sure both you and your partner get tested to know for sure that neither of you has an STD.
  • Safe and highly effective vaccines are available for two STDs: hepatitis B and HPV.  HPV is the most common.
  • Use condoms correctly every time you engage in sex.
  • Ideally, staying in a monogamous relationship is the best way to avoid sex with a partner not tested.
  • Don’t be afraid to talk with your sex partner about STDs and how to prevent them.
