Myths About STD Risk that Could be Damaging Your Health

STD Risk

If you’re like most people, your knowledge about STDs fades more each year that sex ed grows a distant memory.

This means that myths and misconceptions about how at-risk you are for STDs may be impacting your sexual health.

We have busted a number of myths surrounding STDs, testing, and sexual health, but because so many people believe and spread this misinformation, there are still many myths we haven’t disproved. Here are a few more you should be aware of so that you don’t compromise your health!

Don’t Believe These Myths About STD Risks

I’m not at risk if my partner is a virgin.

Putting aside the fact that your partner may not be totally forthcoming about their sexual history, there’s also the fact that intercourse isn’t the only sexual act that can spread STDs. Many people consider themselves virgins even after having oral sex, which can spread STDs.

Also, some infections, like HPV and herpes, are passed through skin-to-skin contact, meaning penetration isn’t necessary for them to spread. And still other diseases, like HIV, can be spread through drug use or blood contact.

Douching, showering, or urinating after sex will protect me from STDs.

False. The only protection against STDs when you’re having sex is the proper, consistent use of condoms. There is no way to “wash away” an STD using water or other fluids.

If I’m in a monogamous relationship, I don’t need STD testing.

While being in a committed relationship will cut your STD risk some, there’s always the chance that your partner may have already had an STD before meeting you. 50% of all sexually active people will get an STD by age 25, and because many STDs are asymptomatic, people may not even know that they are spreading them. Even if you trust that your partner would never cheat on you, there’s still that little risk.
