Basic Facts About to Know About STDs

When you enter into a relationship, thinking about STDs may not be the first thing on your mind but knowing your sexual health and that of your partner’s can be critical to your well-being.

What is an STD?

STD stands for “sexually transmitted disease” and there are more than 20 types that can be passed between partners having sexual intercourse who are infected. Sexual activity includes oral, anal, vaginal and in some cases, skin to skin contact. Nearly all sexually active people at some point in their life will be infected with an STD.  STDs are spread very easily, and young people will be hit the hardest by them.  Statistics show 1 out of 4 teenage girls has an STD.  Often STDs have no signs or symptoms in those who are infected or there will be mild or temporary conditions that will be overlooked and diagnosed for something other than an STD.

Can STDs be Cured?

There are some STDs that can be treated and will go away completely. Some cannot be cured but there is a treatment for the symptoms and a few STDs can endanger your life if they are left untreated.  If unsafe and unprotected sexual intercourse practices continue after you get treated for an STD, you still run the risk of getting an STD again. Recent estimates show that there are close to 20 million new sexually transmitted infections in the U.S. every year.

How Can I Avoid Getting an STD?

Having safe and protected sex is important to avoid coming into contact with STDs.  However, not having any sexual intercourse or other kinds of intimate sexual contact is the only sure way to avoid them and waiting to have sex until you are older lowers your chances.  Talking to your partner and bringing up the subject can be difficult but finding out if they are infected is vital.  The CDC estimates there are more than 110 million women and men currently in the US that are infected with an STD.

How do I Know if I Have an STD?

Getting tested is the only way to be sure if you have an STD.  You might have symptoms but many will have none, especially in the early stages.  By the time symptoms do show up, the infection may have already done some damage so knowing if you are infected is the best practice.
