Date rape drugs are serious stuff. The movie The Hangover might be a comedy and show a lighter, over-dramatized take on the impact they can have, but more often than not – they’re not so funny. Date rape drugs are used by sexual perpetrators for sexual violence and abuse. Date rape drugs can lead you into dangerous situations. Before you ever take a sip of a drink you didn’t buy or make, make sure to take all the steps you can to ensure that you’ve not been slipped something harmful. Especially if you’re at a club or bar, which are venues they tend to be most common.

About the Date Rape Drug

There are a variety of date rape drugs out there, but the most common ones are slipped into a drink. They’re usually undetectable – they dissolve quickly and don’t have any smell or taste to them. Some are liquid, others are powder or pills. While they vary slightly, they tend to have the same effect. The difference in drugs is typically the amount of time they take to impact someone, and how long they last.

Date rape drugs, essentially, drug you. Each person may react differently but common effects include tiredness, difficulty standing/walking/speaking, dizziness, memory problems, difficulty moving and more. There are three very common date rape drugs, all known by a variety of nicknames.

  • Rohypnol
  • GHB
  • Ketamine

Each of these drugs causes dangers to an individual. Men and women have both been slipped date rape drugs. And although the name indicates some type of relationship is involved, you don’t have to be on a “date” to be slipped one of these harmful drugs.

Detecting the Date Rape Drug

Many tools are under development that will detect if a date rape drug has been slipped into a drink. Manufactures and scientists have identified the growing concern and have begun to create items such as:

  • sensors and straws that detect date rape drug
  • date rape drug detector coasters
  • blood, hair, urine tests to detect date rape drugs

While it mourns us to even think about someone being slipped the date rape drug, we know it’s a reality. If your concerned you have been given this drug, here are a few action steps for you from womenshealth.gov:

  • Go the hospital ER. In the event you’ve been sexually assaulted, the medical professionals will use a rape kit to collect evidence for the crime.
  • Call the police.
  • Get tested for date rape drugs. (can be done via a urine test)
  • Don’t pick up or clean where the assault occurred. (could be used for DNA evidence)
  • Consider counseling or treatment.

And last – we recommend an STD test as part of your medical evaluation to ensure nothing was passed along to you.

    I had a friend who was hit with a date rape drug. Though nothing happened to him physically, he did crash through a glass door when he passed out. Everyone, please be careful when you are out drinking.

    Thanks for this very informative information. Being drugged is a very scary thought and we have to remember in settings where this is made possible that we are never truly safe.

    I remember when these first became known to the public. I was amazed that they have not only become more common, but there are more types.
